Mount Nebo

Image
Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims who for almost two millennia have been coming to this Jordanian peak where Moses first beheld the Holy Lands. Mount Nebo is a significant religious site that overlooks the Holy Lands and southern Jordan. It is described in the Bible as the vantage point from which Moses first laid eyes on the Promised Land of Israel and is said to be the prophet’s final resting place. The summit is a popular destination for both Christians and Muslims, and for travelers with an interest in history. At Syagha, one of the mountain’s highest peaks, discover the remains of an ancient basilica built by monks almost two millennia ago. Significant elements of this ancient church have been beautifully incorporated into the Memorial Church of Moses, a simple, modern structure that shelters the excavated ruins. Marvel at the incredibly well-preserved mosaics, the oldest of which dates back 1,400 years. At the lookout point, look up at the Brazen Serpent Monument, which

Petra the jewel in Jordan’s crown

Image
Considered the jewel in Jordan’s crown, Petra is a wondrous sight. Enter the city through the Siq—a narrow gorge flanked with imposing cliffs. Observe the engineering brilliance of the Nabataeans, marvel at the extensive archaeological remains, and admire what is a beautiful geological phenomenon. Journey south from Amman on a full-day tour to Petra. Entering the city is all part of the adventure, as the path meanders through a narrow chasm lined with cliffs more than 250 feet (80 m) high. Wonder as the inspiring façade of Al-Khazneh (the Treasury) emerges and the city dwarfs its surroundings. On your tour of the ancient city's highlights, see the grand amphitheater, the Royal Tombs, striking colonnaded streets, and the prominent monastery perched above. Climb to the top for a bird's-eye view of the remarkable scene. YOU WILL understand the history behind the region, how the Nabataean people not only conceived such a grand place but executed it with such precision. Be sure

Madaba, Mt. Nebo and the Dead Sea

Image
Visit the “City of Mosaics”—Madaba, an ancient city south of Amman. See the famous mosaic map before strolling in the streets and perusing offerings from artisan craftsman. Stand atop Mount Nebo to admire the inspirational view and learn about the early destination for Christian pilgrimage. First mentioned in the Bible at the time of 1200 BC, Madaba is renowned for its Umayyad and Byzantine mosaics. Admire the most highly revered piece, a 6th-century map of the Holy Land in the Basilica of St George, which contains more than 2 million pieces of vivid stone. Pick up a souvenir or two from one of the highly skilled artists operating in the town. Next, take a short drive to the summit of Mount Nebo. Absorb the beautiful views over the Dead Sea as far as the rooftops of Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Here, a church marks the holy site thought to be the burial place of Moses. Savor the scene once more as you reflect by the Serpentine Cross, symbolic of Jesus' crucifixion. We then tra

the lowest point on the earth

Image
Dead Sea  Escape the tensions of city life and take a trip to the shores of the Dead Sea. Lie back and relax, absorbing the stunning combination of mountain and sea landscapes. Allow the soothing waters to ease the stresses away and enjoy a delicious lunch in a local beach-side hotel and spa. Journey to the lowest point on Earth: The hypersaline waters lap the shore at 1,400 feet (427 m) below sea level. Though animals struggle in this environment—the water is nearly 10 times saltier than seawater—the natural beauty makes up for it. Gaze across the water to the Jerusalem hills in the west and to mountains flanking the east, and appreciate the dramatic and beautiful landscape. Take a dip—or afloat—in the tranquil setting and feel the mineral-rich water work its magic on your skin. Let the heady mix of salty water, rich mud, and Jordanian sun fortify your body. Break for lunch at a nearby spa and savor the flavors of a local meal as you admire the inspiring views once more. B

the valley of the moon

Image
the valley of the moon Discover the almost-mystical area of the Wadi Rum—the Valley of the Moon. Your Jeep 4x4 cruises over the scorched landscape as you explore the region’s rich geological and archaeological landmarks. Ask the driver to enlighten you on the reserve’s highlights while meeting local Bedouin people. Set off across the desert terrain toward the vast wilderness stretching before you. Your knowledgeable driver advises on the top sights, including the impressive Burdah Rock Bridge—the highest in Wadi Rum— the Seven Pillars of Wisdom rock formation with its pop-culture association, and the countless gorges, arches, and cliffs. Marvel at the ancient rock engravings—petroglyphs—testaments to man’s interaction with nature in the area for thousands of years and a prime example of how humans can adapt to harsh conditions. Observe and meet local Bedouin people who still inhabit the area today. Perhaps enjoy a cup of tea in their company and ask them to share accounts o
