Aqaba is Jordan’s only coastal city. Surrounded by mountains to the North and the Red Sea to the South, Aqaba has a unique microclimate that makes it a perfect holiday destination all year round, together with a long list of activities and attractions there is something for every sort of traveler.
Aqaba is famous for all types of water sports, para-sailing, jet skis, banana boats, water skiing, and windsurfing. with the water, temperatures range from 26ºC in the summer to 20ºC in the winter it’s never too cold to get wet!
The most popular sport in Aqaba is Scuba diving, there are many dive centers offering guided dives, courses, and try dive experiences for first time divers, giving visitors a chance to discover the beautiful coral reefs of the Aqaba Marine Park. For diving services Above and Below work with our sister company SeaStar Water Sports
If you don’t want to get wet you can still enjoy the coral on one of the many glass-bottom boats, or take a red sea cruise and enjoy a meal on board. We can also offer a sport fishing cruise out into the middle of the Gulf of Aqaba.
Away from the sea, Aqaba is filled with history, such as what is believed to be the worlds oldest church dating back to 3rd century AD and the ruins of the ancient Islamic city of Ayla. There is also the Mamluk fort or Aqaba Castle and the Aqaba Archaeological Museum. Just next to the museum is the Arab Revolt Plaza where the Arab revolt flag flies high above the city on a 137 m high pole!
Visit the souk to purchase some local products from gold and silver jewelry to handicrafts, clothes, and perfume. There is also a fantastic food market where you will find fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and spices. If you would like to get a unique local culture experience why not try one of our handicraft classes with a group of local artisans or a cooking class in a Jordanian family home.
There are many restaurants where you can try the local cuisine as well as international dishes. Aqaba is well known for its seafood -make sure you try the Sayyadia. After dinner relax in one of the street cafes and enjoy an argileh and a Turkish coffee or a fresh fruit cocktail.
